The S-400 Missile System has integrated multifunction radar with autonomous detection and targeting systems. It is a mobile, surface-to-air missile system (SAM) designed by Russia, an upgrade to the S-300 family. It is the most dangerous operationally deployed modern long-range SAM (MLR SAM) in the world, considered much ahead of the US-developed Terminal High Altitude Area Defence System (THAAD).
It also consists of anti-air missiles launchers along with command and control missiles. The system can engage all types of aerial targets including aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), and ballistic and cruise missiles within the range of 400km, at an altitude of up to 30km.
The S-400, according to experts, will provide a much-needed advancement to India’s ballistic missile system, thereby strengthening its national air defence network by creating a multi-tier air defence.
the Indian Air Force has no choice but to acquire the S-400 because it is lacking the alternatives that could serve its air defence requirements. both capability and costs are being factored in the S-400 equation, ability of the S-400 to constrain the adversary’s air operations even within their own airspace, is unmatched by typical Western systems offered up as analogues.
