- Karnataka sees 1,000% jump in graft cases; India’s highest
- The number of corruption cases in Karnataka saw a massive jump of more than 1,000% in 2017 compared to the previous year, say data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) last week. This is the highest increase registered in such cases across India.
- The state reported as many as 289 cases in 2017 compared to 25 in 2016, prompting some experts to argue that the sharp increase in percentage terms could be because of the low base number. However, some others pointed out that the number in 2016 could be an anomaly. They cite the 2015 number for the state, which stood at 259.
- Karnataka is among the 11 states that saw an increase in corruption cases, but fewer cases in other states and Union territories together brought down the national figure to 4,062 in 2017, from 4,439 in 2016.
- In the south, two of the five states saw a decline, with Kerala reporting the highest dip — 67%. Overall statistics for the southern states — Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana and Tamil Nadu — stood at 942 in 2017 compared to 878 in 2016. While some UTs reported zero cases, some of the northeastern states reported just one each.
