Census of Karnataka:-
Formerly known as the State of Mysore, the state of Karnataka is located in the southern part of India and has the states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala as neighbors.
Salient Highlights of Census of Karnataka:-
The Population of Karnataka according to the 2011 census stands at about 61 million, making it the 9th most populated state in India. The state is spread over an area of about 190000 sq. km. making it the 8th largest state in the country in terms of area. The density of population per sq. Km. is about 300 and a lot below the national average. The state has a growth rate of about 15% percent which is the 22nd highest growth rate in the country. The population of the state is rising considerably due to rapid efforts towards development and progress. The literacy rate in the state is about 75% which is a cause for concern and a statistic the authorities must take notice of and look to correct in the years to come. The sex ratio in Karnataka stands about 20 points higher than the national average. The statistics in the Karnataka Census 2011 reveal facts that can be taken into consideration by the government in a bid to further its development. The state is moving towards development at a rapid rate and has emerged as one of the prime economical contributors to the revenue of India as a whole.
Karnataka Population 2011:-
As per details from Census 2011, Karnataka has population of 6.11 Crores, an increase from figure of 5.29 Crore in 2001 census. Total population of Karnataka as per 2011 census is 61,095,297 of which male and female are 30,966,657 and 30,128,640 respectively. In 2001, total population was 52,850,562 in which males were 26,898,918 while females were 25,951,644. The total population growth in this decade was 15.60 percent while in previous decade it was 17.25 percent. The population of Karnataka forms 5.05 percent of India in 2011. In 2001, the figure was 5.14 percent.
Karnataka Literacy Rate 2011:-
Literacy rate in Karnataka has seen upward trend and is 75.36 percent as per 2011 population census. Of that, male literacy stands at 82.47 percent while female literacy is at 68.08 percent. In 2001, literacy rate in Karnataka stood at 66.64 percent of which male and female were 76.10 percent and 56.87 percent literate respectively. In actual numbers, total literates in Karnataka stands at 40,647,322 of which males were 22,508,471 and females were 18,138,851.
Karnataka Density 2011:-
Total area of Karnataka is 191,791 sq. km. Density of Karnataka is 319 per sq km which is lower than national average 382 per sq km. In 2001, density of Karnataka was 276 per sq km, while nation average in 2001 was 324 per sq km.
Karnataka Sex Ratio:-
Sex Ratio in Karnataka is 973 i.e. for each 1000 male, which is below national average of 940 as per census 2011. In 2001, the sex ratio of female was 965 per 1000 males in Karnataka.
Karnataka Religious Data:-
Hinduism is majority religion in state of Karnataka with 84.00 % followers. Islam is second most popular religion in state of Karnataka with approximately 12.92 % following it. In Karnataka state, Christinity is followed by 1.87 %, Jainism by 0.72 %, Sikhism by 0.05 % and Buddhism by 0.05 %. Around 0.02 % stated ‘Other Religion’, approximately 0.27 % stated ‘No Particular Religion’.
Karnataka Urban Population 2011:-
Out of total population of Karnataka, 38.67% people live in urban regions. The total figure of population living in urban areas is 23,625,962 of which 12,037,303 are males and while remaining 11,588,659 are females. The urban population in the last 10 years has increased by 38.67 percent. Sex Ratio in urban regions of Karnataka was 963 females per 1000 males. For child (0-6) sex ratio the figure for urban region stood at 946 girls per 1000 boys. Total children (0-6 age) living in urban areas of Karnataka were 2,643,388. Of total population in urban region, 11.19 % were children (0-6). Average Literacy rate in Karnataka for Urban regions was 85.78 percent in which males were 90.04% literate while female literacy stood at 77.97%. Total literates in urban region of Karnataka were 17,998,146.
Karnataka Rural Population 2011:-
Of the total population of Karnataka state, around 61.33 percent live in the villages of rural areas. In actual numbers, males and females were 18,929,354 and 18,539,981 respectively. Total population of rural areas of Karnataka state was 37,469,335. The population growth rate recorded for this decade (2001-2011) was 61.33%. In rural regions of Karnataka state, female sex ratio per 1000 males was 979 while same for the child (0-6 age) was 950 girls per 1000 boys. In Karnataka, 4,517,645 children (0-6) live in rural areas. Child population forms 12.06 percent of total rural population. In rural areas of Karnataka, literacy rate for males and female stood at 77.61 % and 58.32 %. Average literacy rate in Karnataka for rural areas was 68.73 percent. Total literates in rural areas were 22,649,176.

As per data released by Govt. of India for Census 2011, Bangalore is an Urban Agglomeration coming under category of Million Plus UA/City. Bangalore city is governed by Municipal Corporation and is situated in Bangalore Urban Region. The total population of Bangalore UA/Metropolitan region is 8,520,435. The male population of which is 4,433,855 while female population is 4,086,580.
- Bangalore Literacy Rate 2011:-
The literacy rate of Bangalore Agglomeration is 88.69% which is higher than National Urban average of 85 %. Literacy rate for male and female for Bangalore stood at 91.71 % and 85.40 % respectively. Total literates in Bangalore UA were 6,735,513 of which males were 3,629,096 and remaining 3,106,417 were females.
- Bangalore Child Population 2011:-
The children (0-6 age) population of Bangalore UA is around 10.86 % of total Bangalore UA population which is lower than National Urban average of 10.93 %. Total children in Bangalore Urban region were 925,665 of which male were 476,632 while remaining 449,033 childs were female.
- Bangalore Sex Ratio 2011:-
The sex ratio of female to male in Bangalore UA was found lower with figure of 922 females against national urban average of 926 females per 1000 males. For children (0-6 age), girls were 942 per 1000 boys in Bangalore Urban region against national average of 902 girls per 1000 boys.
Mysore Urban Region:-
As per data released by Govt. of India for Census 2011, Mysore is an Urban Agglomeration coming under category of Class I UAs/Towns. Mysore city is governed by Municipal Corporation and is situated in Mysore Urban Region. The total population of Mysore UA/Metropolitan region is 990,900. The male population of which is 497,138 while female population is 493,762.
- Mysore Literacy Rate 2011:-
The literacy rate of Mysore Agglomeration is 87.55% which is higher than National Urban average of 85 %. Literacy rate for male and female for Mysore stood at 90.56 % and 84.53 % respectively. Total literates in Mysore UA were 784,796 of which males were 406,450 and remaining 378,346 were females.
- Mysore Child Population 2011:-
The children (0-6 age) population of Mysore UA is around 9.54 % of total Mysore UA population which is lower than National Urban average of 10.93 %. Total children in Mysore Urban region were 94,497 of which male were 48,329 while remaining 46,168 childs were female.

The sex ratio of female to male in Mysore UA was found higher with figure of 993 females against national urban average of 926 females per 1000 males. For children (0-6 age), girls were 955 per 1000 boys in Mysore Urban region against national average of 902 girls per 1000 boys.
Mangalore Urban Region:-
As per data released by Govt. of India for Census 2011, Mangalore is an Urban Agglomeration coming under category of Class I UAs/Towns. Mangalore city is governed by Municipal Corporation and is situated in Mangalore Urban Region. The total population of Mangalore UA/Metropolitan region is 623,841. The male population of which is 309,380 while female population is 314,461.
- Mangalore Literacy Rate 2011:-
The literacy rate of Mangalore Agglomeration is 93.40% which is higher than National Urban average of 85 %. Literacy rate for male and female for Mangalore stood at 96.03 % and 90.84 % respectively. Total literates in Mangalore UA were 528,860 of which males were 268,631 and remaining 260,229 were females.
- Mangalore Child Population 2011:-
The children (0-6 age) population of Mangalore UA is around 9.24 % of total Mangalore UA population which is lower than National Urban average of 10.93 %. Total children in Mangalore Urban region were 57,623 of which male were 29,638 while remaining 27,985 childs were female.
- Mangalore Sex Ratio 2011:-
The sex ratio of female to male in Mangalore UA was found higher with figure of 1016 females against national urban average of 926 females per 1000 males. For children (0-6 age), girls were 944 per 1000 boys in Mangalore Urban region against national average of 902 girls per 1000 boys.
Belgaum Urban Region:-
As per data released by Govt. of India for Census 2011, Belgaum is an Urban Agglomeration coming under category of Class I UAs/Towns. Belgaum city is governed by Municipal Corporation and is situated in Belgaum Urban Region. The total population of Belgaum UA/Metropolitan region is 610,350. The male population of which is 308,905 while female population is 301,445.
- Belgaum Literacy Rate 2011:-
The literacy rate of Belgaum Agglomeration is 89.25% which is higher than National Urban average of 85 %. Literacy rate for male and female for Belgaum stood at 93.46 % and 84.97 % respectively. Total literates in Belgaum UA were 485,207 of which males were 256,410 and remaining 228,797 were females.
- Belgaum Child Population 2011:-
The children (0-6 age) population of Belgaum UA is around 10.93 % of total Belgaum UA population which is higher than National Urban average of 10.93 %. Total children in Belgaum Urban region were 66,719 of which male were 34,551 while remaining 32,168 childs were female.
- Belgaum Sex Ratio 2011:-
The sex ratio of female to male in Belgaum UA was found higher with figure of 976 females against national urban average of 926 females per 1000 males. For children (0-6 age), girls were 931 per 1000 boys in Belgaum Urban region against national average of 902 girls per 1000 boys.
Gulbarga Urban Region:-
As per data released by Govt. of India for Census 2011, Gulbarga is an Urban Agglomeration coming under category of Class I UAs/Towns. Gulbarga city is governed by Municipal Corporation and is situated in Gulbarga Urban Region. The total population of Gulbarga UA/Metropolitan region is 543,147. The male population of which is 276,552 while female population is 266,595.
- Gulbarga Literacy Rate 2011:-
The literacy rate of Gulbarga Agglomeration is 82.20% which is lower than National Urban average of 85 %. Literacy rate for male and female for Gulbarga stood at 87.81 % and 76.41 % respectively. Total literates in Gulbarga UA were 389,182 of which males were 211,138 and remaining 178,044 were females.
- Gulbarga Child Population 2011:-
The children (0-6 age) population of Gulbarga UA is around 12.83 % of total Gulbarga UA population which is higher than National Urban average of 10.93 %. Total children in Gulbarga Urban region were 69,666 of which male were 36,096 while remaining 33,570 childs were female.
- Gulbarga Sex Ratio 2011:-
The sex ratio of female to male in Gulbarga UA was found higher with figure of 964 females against national urban average of 926 females per 1000 males. For children (0-6 age), girls were 930 per 1000 boys in Gulbarga Urban region against national average of 902 girls per 1000 boys.
